Navigation and Communications

Lochmarin is  a 55ft aft cockpit pilot house aluminium ketch, with a centre board, launched in 1990 by Whisstocks Ltd in Woodbridge England. She was built to Loyd’s 100 A1 plus class standard and is strong, fast, comfortable, easy to handle by minimum crew and designed to be the perfect blue water cruiser.

She has two forward guest cabins (double and twin bunks respectively) with shared shower and separate toilet and a stern owner’s ensuite cabin. She also has a pilot berth in the pilot house and an additional berth in the saloon if needed.

The saloon is extremely spacious and has a galley perfectly designed for use at sea with large fridge and freezer custom built and installed in 2015 and a newly installed GN Espace Levante three burner with oven cooker (“That cooker  (Levante 3) is probably the best piece of kit I’ve fitted to my boat in the last ten years” – Kieran Flatt, Editor of Yachting Monthly). She also has a microwave oven which can be run on the  inverter.

She has a 85hp Perkins M92b fitted in 2011 (2232hrs) together with a Northern Lights 7kW generator fitted at the same time. At cruising revs (1500rpm) she will make 7.5 Kts and use about 3.5/4 litres/hr.

She is ketch rigged with fully battened main and mizzen, twin poled Yankees, staysail, lightweight genoa, cruising chute (in sock), mizzen staysail. Heavy weather sails comprise a storm trysail (on separate track) and hanked on storm jib. The rig was completely renewed in 2009 and comprises all stainless steel wires with StaLok fittings on both ends of each stay.

She comes equipped with a 104 lb main CQR anchor with 100 metres of 12mm hi strength chain( regalvanised 2017) on a brand new Lofrans x4 windlass just fitted. A secondary bower anchor comprises a 70lb Bruce on 20m 10mm chain and 80m of multiplait nylon warp which is deployed via a second Simpson Lawrence Seatiger manual windlass. A further 100m of 12mm chain is stowed in the bilge as backup or extension for deep anchorages. Further Danforth anchors and Kedges are also carried. For mooring in the deep fjords of Patagonia she carries 2 stainless reels of floating line fore and aft mounted on the foredeck and at the stern.

She has a Raymarine below decks hydraulic autopilot (new pump 2017) which we use constantly for steering and a Monitor wind self-steerer for ocean passages.
